At Yellowstone Family Dentistry, we provide sedation and hospital dentistry in Chico for anxious and dental phobic patients. Why Sedation Dentistry?

Sedation dentist in Chico

Visiting the dentist bi-annually and receiving consistent care is essential to maintaining good health and a beautiful smile. Some patients with dental fear and anxiety can go years without visiting the dentist. This can be detrimental to their oral and overall health if infection and other dental problems are allowed to spread. Sedation dentistry allows nervous patients to overcome these fears allowing for necessary treatment to be completed.

Many patients seek out sedation dentistry for the following reasons:

- Difficulty getting numb with local anesthetics
- Dental pain and sensitive teeth
- Bad gag reflex, making appointments difficult
- Complex treatment that requires longer, multiple appointments

Sedation and Hospital Dentistry in Chico

Sedation dentistry in Chico at Yellowstone Family Dentistry provides a relaxing and stress-free experience for all patients. Our sedation options include:

Nitrous oxide or laughing gas is an effective sedation option for adults and children who have mild to moderate anxiety, allowing them to comfortably receive dental care. Patients experience a calm, floating feeling, but remain awake during their dental procedure. Once treatment is completed patients are able to return to work or their normal daily routine without any issues.

Oral sedation, also known as sleep dentistry, is administered by taking a pill an hour before your appointment. With this moderate sedative, patients are calm and experience drowsiness but are conscious and communicative during treatment. Patients undergoing this type of sedation need a trusted family member or individual to drive them home and stay with them for the rest of the day.

Oral Conscious Sedation (OCS) is a form of sedation that uses a combination of medications to relax patients for dental procedures.  The dosage amount and medications are different for each patient. This sedation type can be used in combination with nitrous oxide, for a deeper sedative effect. Dr. Saunders is certified to provide oral conscious sedation for our pediatric and adult patients with severe anxiety. Like oral sedation, patients need someone to bring them to and from the appointment, as well as stay with them for the remainder of the day.

Hospital Dentistry with General Anesthesia

Hospital Dentistry is recommended for children or patients with special needs who have extreme anxiety and multiple areas of extensive decay where several visits are required to complete treatment if done in the office. In these cases, patients are unable to complete treatment in office with minimal or moderate sedation. Therefore dentistry under general anesthesia in a hospital setting is recommended, as all treatment is completed in one appointment. Dr. Saunders and Dr. Lim provide dental services at a hospital with anesthesiologists. Patients should have someone to drive them home and stay with them after their appointment. Although patients for hospital dentistry are accepted by referral only from referring dentists, referrals to other facilities are honored.
